Car Insurance Coverage for Partial and Total Theft

Car insurance in Mexico can cover total or partial theft, depending on the policy you have.

"Robo total" (Car Theft): Refers to the complete appropriation of the vehicle without the owner’s consent.

  • The insurer compensates you with the vehicle’s value (as stipulated in your policy).

"Robo Parcial" (Partial Theft): Covers the theft of parts or accessories from the car, such as tires or stereos, but only if you have purchased this coverage.

Practical Example:

If your car is stolen while parked and you have "robo total" (car theft) coverage, the insurer will pay the agreed-upon value. However, if only the mirrors are stolen and you don’t have "robo parcial" (partial theft) coverage, you’ll need to cover the costs yourself.

Requirements for Filing a Claim:

  1. File a report with the "Ministerio Público".

  2. Notify your insurer immediately.

  3. Provide the vehicle’s documentation.
